A new vaccination campaign against covid-19 starts in less than a week. The Minister of Health, Dr Daniel Ngamije, announced this at a symposium organized by the Organisation de la Presse Francophone au Rwanda (OPFR) in Kigali.

After administering two doses to each of the 350,400 people vaccinated against covid-19, the Minister of Health, Dr Daniel Ngamije, announced a new vaccination campaign.

“The vaccination programme against covid-19 is continuing. As we receive doses, we are vaccinating more people,” says Health Minister Dr Daniel Ngamije. “We have just received more vaccines. We are going to serve especially the elderly and those suffering from non-communicable diseases,” says Minister Dr. Ngamije.

“Their registration has started, so anyone who is 65 years old and has not yet been vaccinated should go to the nearest health centre to register and enquire about the appointment for vaccination,” says Minister Ngamije.

At the Rugarama health centre in Nyamirambo sector, Nyarugenge district, they say they are waiting for instructions to start registering new people. For the time being they are continuing to inject the second dose of Asra Zeneka to those who are overdue.

A fortnight ago Rwanda received 247,000 doses of Asra Zeneka vaccine for the second dose, of which more than 100,000 were donated by France.

France supports Rwanda in the fight against covid-19

On 27 May, the Rwandan government and the French Development Agency (AFD) signed a financing agreement worth 60 million Euros (about 71.8 billion FRW). This budgetary support will be used to support the health response plan against covid-19 through the purchase of vaccines and their distribution. It will also be used to finance the social protection intervention plan.

According to Juliette Bigot, Counsellor for Cooperation and Cultural Action at the French Embassy in Rwanda, cooperation in the field of health has been developing for two years. The recent agreement is in fact a renewal of the one of 30 June 2020. AFD had granted a 40 million euro loan to Rwanda.

Cooperation in the health sector is not limited to the fight against covid-19. “In terms of human resources, several Rwandan doctors are specializing in France in certain disciplines that have a future in Rwanda, such as nephrology, kidney transplantation and gynaecology,” says Juliette Bigot from the French Embassy.

In the field of research, an agreement was signed between INSERM, a public medical research institution, and the Rwandan Ministry of Health during President Paul Kagame’s visit to France from 17 to 18 May.

A major project will be the rehabilitation of the Fayçal Hospital. “France is committed to making it a state-of-the-art hospital that can attract patients not only from Rwanda but also from the region,” says Juliette Bigot.
