The medical and laboratory equipment production plant, Pharmalab, with covid-19, is moving into the production of surgical masks.
“The feasibility study of the project has enabled us to move to the investment stage,” explains the sales director, Cyriaque Rugwizangoga. The machine was imported and the workers were trained.
“This is not a circumstantial production, we intend to continue our business even after covid-19,” adds Mr. Cyriaque Rugwizangoga.
“We hope that Rwanda will stop importing surgical masks because ours have nothing to envy those imported from India or China,” says Rugwizangoga.
There are three kinds of masks on the Rwandan market. Fabric masks, N95 and those from Pharmalab. “Our quality is very good. These are Type II masks. The quality is 98%,” Rugwizangoga boasts.
At the moment the production capacity is 101 units per minute. For one hour 6000, while in 24 hours the Pharmalab factory can produce up to 140,000 masks. Monthly production can reach 2 million surgical masks if the market is not lacking.
Commercial director Cyriaque Rugwizangoga reminds that imported masks have been exempted. “We would also like to benefit from this advantage because we import the raw material. So the price per unit will be lower and within everyone’s reach.
The company was launched in 2004 by three Rwandans. The start was devoted to importing medical and laboratory equipment. In 2015, they decided to move to the production phase. With the covid-19, they started the production of surgical masks.
