Three grenades were thrown in two different places on Monday 20 September in Bujumbura, resulting in two deaths and several injuries. The Burundian Ministry of the Interior, Community Development and Public Security condemns these acts of terrorism.
At around 7pm, in commune Mukaza, three grenades were thrown in Burundi’s economic capital. Two exploded in the car park of downtown Bujumbura near the former central market. Another one near the Jabe market, in the Bwiza area.
According to a statement from the Burundian Ministry of the Interior, Community Development and Public Security published on Tuesday 21 September, two people died, one in the city and the other in hospital after the injured were evacuated by the police.
“The Ministry of the Interior, Community Development and Public Security condemns with the utmost energy this nameless barbarity,” reads the statement.
The Burundian authorities promise a “thorough investigation to put these nameless terrorist cowards out of action.”
So far, there has been no claim of these acts having been organized in places of large gatherings. The ministry in charge of public security recommends to the population to be particularly vigilant in such places.
