Since the start of the covid-19 pandemic in 2020, ginger has become increasingly popular in families and restaurants.
According to a now popular opinion, this plant has positive effects on covid-19. “When you eat ginger regularly, the covid-19 test cannot be positive,”: says a regular consumer of this Asian plant.
In East African countries and further afield on the continent and in the rest of the world, ginger combined with lemon and honey in hot drinks is used for preventive and therapeutic purposes. In particular, it is consumed to protect against covid-19.
Several in vitro and animal tests have revealed numerous properties of this plant used as a spice in food or drinks. According to Passeport Santé, ginger contains many active compounds. These give it its pungent flavour.
It has anti-tumour, anti-bacterial, antioxidant, anti-platelet and anti-inflammatory effects.
Its virtues
Ginger has many virtues. In addition to its reputation as a powerful aphrodisiac, Zingiber officinale is a plant that improves digestion. Research has shown that it can help maintain intestinal flora and digest fats better. It is also used as a tonic. Thanks to its antiemetic action, ginger is also said to reduce nausea and vomiting. If you have motion sickness or if you are pregnant, it could be useful to you. Ginger is also said to have the ability to reduce fever, in addition to an antibacterial action.
No scientific study has yet confirmed the popular belief that ginger has a protective effect against covid-19.
Whatever its benefits, ginger should not replace the usual measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Barrier measures should continue to be followed.
