A 37-year-old boy died on Wednesday August 12 in Rwanda because of covid-19. The death toll thus amounts to eight people.
Since last March, the number of deaths due to covid-19 in Rwanda amounts to eight people. The last one was only 37 years old, according to Bosco Gasherebuka of the World Health Organization Kigali office.
“covid-19 kills at any age. No one is spared by the covid-19 pandemic,” he added. “Everyone must protect themselves to prevent the spread of the coronavirus so that this disease can be defeated,” he said.
He made this intervention during a virtual training on Thursday, August 13, 2020 for 55 journalists. It was organized by the Rwandan Association of Journalists (ARJ) with the financial support of UNICEF. The aim is to produce news on the impact of covid-19 on children.
Young people are most at risk
Contrary to the situation in the West, in Rwanda it is young people who are most at risk of covid-19, although older people are at risk of severe covid-19.
The latest graph from the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) shows that out of 2219 individuals who tested positive, 1414 (63.8%) are between 20 and 39 years old.
In detail, 260 are under 20 years old, 799 are aged 20 to 29, 617 are in the range of 30 to 39, 287 are aged 40 to 49, 140 are aged 50 to 59, 63 are aged 60 to 69, 19 are aged 70 to 79 and 3 are over 80 years old.

According to Bosco Gasherebuka, it is everyone’s responsibility to comply with measures to control the spread of the coronavirus.
So when everyone is asked to wash their hands as often as possible, to wear their masks outside their homes and to respect social distancing, there is no exaggeration. “It’s the only way to beat covid-19 at the moment,” says Bosco Gasherebuka.
