For the first time in Rwanda, new positive cases have just reached an unprecedented number, 574 people this Tuesday, January 26, 2021.
The health situation due to the covid-19 pandemic shows that the number of positive cases is on the rise in the country and has reached an unprecedented number in one day. Kigali in confinement is registering 440 new covid-19 patients.
This would be explained by the increase in testing. 10,407 covid-19 pandemic tests have been carried out. This is also a record number.
From 23 to 25 January, Rwanda launched a cell-based testing campaign in the city of Kigali. People over 70 years of age and those suffering from non-communicable diseases such as diabetes were targeted. More than 20,000 city dwellers are expected to benefit from this initiative by Rwandan health institutions.
Julien Mahoro Niyingabira, division manager of communication at the Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) adds decentralization in screening as a main reason for this significant increase in positive cases.
Despite statistics that could worry the public, the Minister of Health, Dr. Daniel Ngamije, was optimistic. He hopes that by the end of the week the situation could improve. “We have started to prescribe favipiravir to patients suffering from covid-19, we hope that in a week’s time the health situation could be better,” he said on national television.

In less than a week, some people should start benefiting from the covid-19 vaccine. Priority will be given to medical, security and vulnerable people, including the elderly and people suffering from non-communicable diseases.
