Rwandan cyclist Samuel Mugisha has arrived in Italy to take part in the 2020 Road World Championships. He is the only cyclist representing Rwanda.
“I am happy to have arrived safe and sound in Italy to participate in a world cycling competition. I am delighted to represent my country,” said Samuel Mugisha on his Twitter account.
In a telephone interview with Times Sport, Mugisha said he was in good shape.
“I am well prepared and will do my best to represent my country well,” he said. However, he acknowledged that the task will not be easy. “It will obviously be a tough race against some of the best riders in the world,” he said.
Mugisha flew to Italy from France where he has been since last month. He had left Kigali on the first day of August for the Club LMP-La Roche-Sur-Yon.
He is the only Rwandan and one of only four African cyclists in the competition. The Moroccan, Zahri Abderrahim and two South Africans, Nicolas Dlamini and Louis Meintjes, will also take part in the road race for the elite men.
The 2020 World Cycling Championships began on Thursday 24 September with the women’s 31.7 km time trial, Friday 25 September saw the men’s 31.7 km time trial, Saturday 26 September saw the women’s 142.9 km road race, and Sunday 27 September saw the men’s 258 km road race.
Samuel Mugisha, the champion of the Tour of Rwanda 2018, will have to compete against the other great cyclists of the world this Sunday.
