Rwanda is awaiting the release of 174 Rwandans incarcerated in Uganda. A statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr Vincent Biruta, to the press.
At a press conference on Friday, May 15, Foreign Minister Dr. Vincent Biruta announced the release next week of 174 Rwandans detained in Uganda in an irregular manner.
“We expect the release of 174 Rwandans, very soon,” he said. For Minister Biruta, this is a timely development as the two countries seek to resolve their political conflict and redirect their efforts towards the fight against covid-19.
Minister Vincent Biruta was accompanied by the Secretary of State for East African Community Affairs, Professor Nshuti Manasseh.
According to Minister Biruta, “there are signs of optimism regarding the implementation of the Luanda Memorandum of Understanding on the normalization of relations between Rwanda and Uganda. »
Minister Biruta says the ad hoc committee is to hold a virtual meeting to review progress in the implementation of the Luanda MoU, with 174 Rwandans likely to be released from Ugandan prisons next week.
However, Dr Biruta said Uganda has shown mixed signals. That country is working on the concerns but at the same time arresting more Rwandans. On the other hand, some officials are making statements that are not known whether they are official or individual.
