The CNDD-FDD candidate, Evariste Ndayishimiye, won the presidential election of Burundi with 68.72%, according to provisional results proclaimed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) on Monday, May 25, 2020. He is followed by Agathon Rwasa of CNL who obtained 24.19%.
Burundi’s new president, Major General Evariste Ndayishimiye, is from the same political family as outgoing President Pierre Nkurunziza. He was secretary general of the National Council for the Defence of Democracy-Force for the Defence of Democracy (CNDD-FDD). He is 52 years old, married and the father of eight children.

The CNDD-FDD party also won the legislative elections. It won 72 seats in the National Assembly against 27 for the CNL and 1 for Uprona, which went to former vice-president Gaston Sindimwo. He quickly accepted the results of the elections.
“We take note of the results proclaimed by CENI today and we warmly congratulate the winner General Neva,” he posted on Twitter. “As Prince Louis Rwagasore said, after the competition, the place goes to the development of the country despite the political diversity,” he added.
