The spread of the coronavirus in Rwanda has been on the rise in the last five days. Figures presented by the Ministry of Health show a resurgence of covid-19 in the country.
The new cases registered on Monday 15 June amount to 30 out of 6 cured patients, bringing the active cases to 272.
The day before, on June 14, the new cases revealed by the Ministry of Health were 41 out of 0 cured.
On 13 June, 31 new cases of covid-19 were recorded out of 11 cured. The number of patients under treatment, according to the Ministry of Health press release, was 207.
On 12 June, the covid-19 response services had released 16 new cases tested positive out of 8 cures. 187 was the number of patients.
On 11 June, 18 new cases were released to the public against 6 cured cases, with the number of sick people reaching 179.
The coronavirus is spreading in several districts
The new cases had recently been presented as coming from two neighbouring countries, Tanzania and the DRC. Measures have been taken against the drivers to prevent a wide spread of the coronavirus throughout the country. Several areas of Rusizi District have been placed under containment to protect the rest of the population.
However, two positive cases have just been diagnosed in Nyamasheke, on the border with Rusizi, and four in Kigali, the capital. These cases are believed to have come from Rusizi. The Rwanda Biomedical Centre has taken the urgent step of organizing mass testing of covid-19 to ascertain the extent of the problem. The results should be used to take appropriate action.
In the meantime, protective measures such as social distancing, proper wearing of masks and hand washing should be vigorously enforced. Some people in the City of Kigali believe that coming out of containment was the end of the coronavirus. “During the period of the coronavirus, we couldn’t, …, ” comment more and more people in Kigali as if it were a story from the past.
