Polls for the German parliamentary elections scheduled for September 2021 show the Greens in the lead over the conservative CDU-CDS.
According to the latest polls, the Green Party is the most favoured party with 28%. They are ahead of the conservative CDU-CDS coalition.
Angela Merkel’s CDU has unilaterally appointed Armin Laschet as leader of the CDU-CDS coalition in the legislative elections. Markus Söder, the CDS candidate, favoured unity by declaring that he would support the CDU candidate.
Armin Laschet would be less popular than Annalena Baerbock of the Greens. This would have led to the CDU-CDS losing their leading position in German politics, at least for the time being.
By the end of September, if this change is confirmed, the conservatives will lose the German chancellery to the Greens. The Greens will have to join forces with another political party in order to gain a majority in the Bundestag.
Angela Merkel has been chancellor of the German Republic since 2005. For 16 years the conservatives were in power. The loss of the 28 September parliamentary elections would put the CDU-CDS on the sidelines to play the political game in opposition.
