With the support of the International Organization of Francophonie (OIF-Francophonie), the teaching of French in Rwanda will be upgraded. 30 French teachers are already deployed in the country.
The Secretary of State at the Ministry of Education, Gaspard Twagirayezu, received on Tuesday 30 experts in the teaching of French from different French-speaking countries. They are in Rwanda with the support of the OIF-Francophonie. “With the support of the OIF, we have 30 teachers from different countries to help us raise the level of the French language in the country,” said Gaspard Twagirayezu.
Without changing the language of instruction, which remains English, the Rwandan government wants to strengthen the French language in learning. “We want to strengthen the teaching of French so that our children can also express themselves in French with ease,” he said.
The contribution of the OIF will be financial and technical for the strengthening of the teaching of French in primary and secondary schools, said Juliette Bigot, Counsellor for Cooperation and Cultural Action at the French Embassy in Kigali. “France in Rwanda will also intervene in the implementation of this project,” she added.
These experts will teach in Rwandan schools but will also contribute to the training of teachers.
Rwanda is counting on the profitability of this project to revalorize the French language. The Ministry of Education would now like to assess the level of expression of learners in the language of Molière during national examinations.
