Ten years after the unexpected death of sports journalist Shyaka Claver, he remains unforgettable. He passed away on 12 August 2010.
Ten years after his death, former Radio 10 journalist Shyaka Claver, his colleagues still see him as a role model and are not ready to forget him.
“Shyaka Claver was the first journalist to launch a daily sports programme 7 days a week. It took a lot of creativity and perseverance. He was at the microphone alone for an hour every day,” recalls Didace Nifasha, a journalist with Radio Inkoramutima.
Nifasha, who worked with Shyaka Claver, says he was full of creativity. “You couldn’t get tired of listening to his sports programme. It presented varied, original and analytical information,” he says.
“After him, many people across the country followed his lead. Several sports programmes were launched in different media,” says Nifasha. “We are not ready to forget him,” he insists.
It should be added that this journalist Shyaka Claver lived in conviviality with everyone.
Jado Castar Bagirishya of Radio Salus, who was introduced to the profession by Shyaka, says he worked professionally. “We knew that he liked APR FC and Manchester but it was not easy for those who were listening to him on the microphone to know that. It was not common,” he said.
“He didn’t insult people the way we hear it today. He gave the information and nothing but the information. That’s the one Shyaka left us,” he reveals.
Shyaka Claver died on the morning of August 12, 2010 when he went to the service as usual. He felt faint, was taken to hospital and died just outside the door.
